Impact Echo - What is it?

Impact-echo testing is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to evaluate the thickness of concrete structures and detect internal flaws. The technique uses a short-duration mechanical impact applied to the concrete surface to generate stress waves that travel through the concrete. These waves are reflected by interfaces within the structure, such as the opposite surface of a concrete member or internal discontinuities like a void.

A sensor positioned on the concrete surface records the resulting response. The recorded signal is analyzed in the frequency domain to identify dominant reflections and determine the depth or location of reflecting interfaces. The method is especially useful when only one side of the structure is accessible such as a spillway slab.

Impact Echo Applications
  • Evaluate the thickness of concrete slabs, walls, and decks when access is limited to one side of the structure

  • Investigate internal flaws and voids within a concrete section

  • Confirm areas of delamination or internal cracking
