GPR - What is it?
Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a non-destructive testing method used to evaluate reinforced concrete and locate embedded features without damaging the structure. High-frequency electromagnetic waves are transmitted into the concrete, and reflections from reinforcing steel, post-tensioning, conduits, voids, and other interfaces can be evaluated for location and depth.
GPR Applications
-
Locate reinforcing steel, conduits, subdrains, and anchorages prior to drilling or cutting
-
Measure reinforcement spacing and development lengths to confirm construction drawings
-
Measure the depth of concrete cover - this is an important data point when also performing chloride and carbonation tests
-
Measure the thickness of slabs and walls
-
Locate areas of voiding or delamination
