Emergency Storage Well Investigation

The inspection of the Emergency Storage Well found that the original interior coating system had failed, leaving the concrete exposed to the sewer environment and resulting in significant acid attack. Very severe scaling and softened concrete were observed throughout the structure resulting in minimal sound concrete cover remaining over the reinforcing steel in some areas.

The inspection and testing program included:

• Visual Inspection

• Ground Penetrating Radar

• Delamination Survey

• Concrete Core Extraction

Laboratory testing Program:

• Depth of Carbonation

• Chloride Testing (ASTM C1218)

• pH Testing at Depth

• Compressive Strength Testing (ASTM C42)

Based on these findings, partial-depth concrete repairs were recommended within the next 3 to 5 years before reinforcing steel becomes exposed and significant corrosion occurs. Following partial depth repairs, it was recommended that a durable coating system be applied to all exposed concrete surfaces to extend the usable life of the structure.
